Nanny/Caregiver Services
One of the most frequently asked questions regarding our live-in nanny/provider service is:
What do I look for when I'm screening a live-in nanny for my child or live-in provider for my elderly parent?
When you are screening a live-in, you must put the applicant through both an (a) subjective test and (b) an objective test.
(a) the subjective test-- this includes a face-to-face interview, if possible. The subjective test involves being prepared and asking pointed questions to draw out the details (i.e. getting the applicant to move beyond their canned answers to questions they've been asked many times before).
To save everyone time and aggravation, make sure to be completely up front with what you will expect from your applicant. Will they be cleaning the house as well as taking care of your child? The type of care expected for for an elderly parent or other care-receiver is not always obvious - what are your care receiver's limitations? What can and can't they do on their own? How often do you expect your applicant to stay with the care-receiver? Overnight? How would your nanny or care-giver respond to an emergency situation? Has he/she ever had to deal with an emergency? Let them tell you about those experiences.
(b) an objective test-- this includes making sure you see a valid government-issued ID (i.e. drivers license, passport, etc.) and running a criminal-background search. Criminal screening may return information that your applicant would never voluntarily disclose no matter how many questions you ask during your interview. Will your live-in be required to drive the care-receiver around town (e.g. to school, to medical appointments, to the store)? If so, you should consider running a motor-vehicle report on your applicant as well as a criminal-background search.
We, at Screen2Hire.com, condend that the subjective test is just as important as the objective one. Ultimately, the hiring decision is yours. Personalities vary tremendously, and its up to you to make sure you only hire someone you feel comfortable leaving alone with your child or any care-receiver. Screen2Hire.com hopes it can assist in your endeavor to obtain peace of mind regarding your prospective live-in. A list of Screen2Hire.com's Background Solutions are available by clicking here.
